POW

Currently I am taking a course through BOCES all about POW’s and problem solving.  For those of you uncertain what POW’s are, they simply stand for Problems of the Week.  This morning I spent about 2 hours trying to figure out the answer for one of the questions.  The questions are not simple and require much thinking on behalf of the students, and in this case….myself!  I was thinking about starting a POW in my class and having the students BLOG about their results.  This way throughout the week I could go online and check in to see what the students are coming up with as answers and answer any questions which may come up.  The POW’s require students to think at a higher level and find meaning behind complex math problems.  After finding the solution the hard way, it is interesting to see the multiple ways the solution could have been attained.  I thought this was an interesting idea to incorporate blogging into a math course.  Has anyone ever tried this before?  If so, was it successful?
